Cinestar vs Cinepax Lahore | Which Cinema Chain is Better?

Six cinemas. Two chains. One question everyone in Lahore eventually asks: Cinestar or Cinepax?

The short answer: Cinepax wins 4 of 6 categories (price, food, parking, booking) while Cinestar wins on screen quality and seat comfort. The cheapest cinema is Cinepax Tower at Rs. 600 per ticket and the best screen is Cinestar COCP IMAX, which runs Rs. 1,500 to 1,800. Read on for the full breakdown.

I've spent more time in both than I probably should have. Over the past year I've hit every Cinestar and every Cinepax in the city, some of them multiple times in the same week. This is what I found.

Which cinema has better screens in Lahore?

Cinestar wins this one, and it's not close. The IMAX screen at Cinestar COCP (Canal Road) is the only one in Lahore. If you care about picture quality, that screen is in a different league from anything Cinepax runs.

Cinestar Township and Xinhua Mall are standard multiplexes. Good screens. Nothing to complain about.

On the Cinepax side, Fortress has solid screens. Cinepax Lake City is newer, so the projectors are still sharp. Cinepax Tower on Link Road, though? Those projectors need replacing. I saw Thunderbolts* there and the image looked washed out compared to the same movie at COCP a day earlier. Night and day difference.

Cinestar takes this. IMAX alone settles it.

How much do Cinestar and Cinepax tickets cost?

Here's where Cinepax pulls ahead.

Cinepax Tower at Rs. 600 is the cheapest ticket in the city. Lake City at Rs. 650 is a better deal though, because you're getting a nicer screen for fifty rupees more.

Cinepax wins on price. Every location undercuts its Cinestar equivalent by Rs. 50 to 150.

Which cinema has more comfortable seats?

I'll give this to Cinestar Township specifically. The seats there are wider than anything else in the city. Good legroom. You don't feel like you're sharing an armrest with a stranger.

Cinestar COCP seats are fine. Nothing special outside the IMAX rows, where the recliners in J through L are worth the Rs. 1,800.

Cinepax Fortress is comfortable enough. But the older rows (A through D) feel cramped. The back rows are better. Lake City seats are clean and new. Tower seats are the worst of the bunch; some of them don't recline properly anymore.

Cinestar Township is the most comfortable cinema in Lahore. Cinestar seats are better built across the board.

Which cinema chain has better food?

Cinepax has put more effort into this. Cinepax Fortress has a proper food menu: burgers, wraps, loaded fries. Not just popcorn and nachos. The burger isn't going to win any awards but it's a real meal if you're coming straight from work and haven't eaten.

Cinepax Lake City has a combo deal (large popcorn plus two drinks for Rs. 800) that I keep coming back to. Best concession deal in the city.

Cinestar is still popcorn, nachos, and soft drinks at all three locations. It's fine. But it's exactly what you'd expect and nothing more.

Cinepax wins on food. More options, better combos.

Where is parking easiest?

This depends entirely on which location you're going to.

Cinestar COCP: Street parking only. Canal Road on a Friday evening is a nightmare. I've circled the block for 15 minutes and still ended up parking two streets away. If you go on a weekend evening, leave early or take a rickshaw.

Cinestar Township: Has its own lot. I've never had trouble finding a spot.

Cinestar Xinhua: Mall parking. Easy in, easy out. Xinhua Mall is never that crowded.

Cinepax Fortress: Fortress Stadium has a big lot but it fills up fast on weekends. Getting out after a 9:30 PM show takes patience.

Cinepax Lake City: This is the easiest parking situation of any cinema in Lahore. Big mall lot, always space.

Cinepax Tower: Limited parking. You'll probably end up on the street.

Lake City wins this category. If parking matters to you, it's the obvious pick.

Which is easier to book, Cinestar or Cinepax?

Cinepax through Bookme.pk is the smoothest booking experience. Pick your movie, pick your seats, pay, done. I've never had a payment fail on Bookme.

Cinestar's own website is slow. Like, noticeably slow. Their app works better but still freezes sometimes during peak booking hours. On a Thursday evening when everyone's trying to lock in Friday tickets, the Cinestar site can take 30 seconds to load the seat map.

CUE's booking site (not part of this comparison but worth mentioning) is by far the best of any cinema chain in Pakistan.

So which cinema chain is better in Lahore?

So what is the best cinema in Lahore? It depends on what matters most to you. If someone asks me where to go, my answer is always the same: what do you care about?

• Big blockbuster you want to see properly? Cinestar COCP in IMAX. Nothing else in Lahore comes close to that screen.
• Casual Tuesday evening, cheap tickets, easy parking, popcorn combo? Cinepax Lake City. It checks every box for a low-effort movie night.
• Comfort and a nice hall? Cinestar Township. Widest seats in the city, and the hall itself feels well maintained.
• Best value overall? Cinepax Lake City again. Rs. 650 for a sharp screen, good parking, and that Rs. 800 combo deal is hard to beat.

Cinepax wins more categories. But Cinestar has IMAX, and for some movies, that matters more than everything else combined.
