Fifteen movies in Lahore cinemas this week. If you're looking for movies in Lahore today, the big one is Aag Lage Basti Mein, which took over every cinema in the city with 288 showtimes. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the family pick, playing at 8 cinemas (3D at Universal Emporium). Project Hail Mary is at 6 cinemas with an Urdu dub at Universal. Big week. Lots of Punjabi releases too. Ishqan De Lekhe, Bullah, Rabb Da Radio 3, Viyaah Kartaare Da, and Bambukat 2 are all running. If you're into Punjabi cinema, this is one of those rare weeks where you have five to pick from.

I caught Aag Lage Basti Mein at Cinestar DHA Raya Club on Friday. Packed hall, crowd was into it. Then Super Mario Galaxy on Saturday at CUE with my nephew. He loved it. I spent most of the movie thinking about how much better the Atmos sound made the soundtrack compared to the last animated movie I saw at a standard cinema.

Aag Lage Basti Mein

This is the one dominating every screen. 288 showtimes across all 8 major cinemas. I don't think I've seen a Pakistani film get this kind of screen count since... I genuinely can't remember the last time.

It's playing at Cinestar DHA Raya Club, Cinestar Township, Cinestar Xinhua Mall, Cinepax Amanah Mall, Cinepax Packages Mall, CUE Cinemas, Universal Emporium, and Cinegold Lahore. All in 2D English.

If you're going on Friday or Saturday evening, book early. The evening shows have been filling up fast. Weekday matinees are wide open.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The family movie of the week. Playing at 8 cinemas in 2D. Universal Emporium also has 3D showings if you want the full effect (my nephew said the 3D "made the stars pop out," which I think means he approved).

Running at all three Cinestars, both active Cinepax locations, CUE, Universal, and Cinegold. This one will have legs. Take the kids on a Tuesday afternoon and you'll practically have the hall to yourself.

3D option: Universal Emporium is the only cinema showing it in 3D. Worth it if you're already headed to Emporium Mall.

Project Hail Mary

The Ryan Gosling sci-fi film based on the Andy Weir novel (same author as The Martian). Playing at 6 cinemas: CUE, Universal, Cinegold, and all three Cinestars.

Urdu dub available: Universal Emporium is running both English and Urdu versions. If you've got family who prefers Urdu, that's your spot.

I haven't seen this one yet. It's next on my list. The book was great and early word is the adaptation holds up. Planning to catch it at CUE for the Atmos sound, since sci-fi usually benefits from the better audio system.

The Punjabi five

Five Punjabi films running simultaneously. That's unusual for Lahore. Here's the breakdown:

Ishqan De Lekhe has the widest release of the bunch, playing at 6 cinemas (CUE, Universal, both Cinepax locations, Cinestar Township, Cinestar Xinhua). 78 showtimes total.

Bullah is at 6 cinemas too (Cinestar Township, Cinestar Xinhua, Universal, Cinepax Packages Mall, CUE, Cinegold). 57 showtimes.

Rabb Da Radio 3 is at 6 cinemas (Cinestar Township, Cinestar Xinhua, Universal, Cinepax Packages Mall, Cinepax Amanah Mall, CUE). 56 showtimes. If you saw the first two, you know what you're getting.

Viyaah Kartaare Da is at 5 cinemas (Universal, Cinestar Township, Cinepax Amanah Mall, Cinepax Packages Mall, CUE). 57 showtimes.

Bambukat 2 has the smallest release at 3 cinemas (Cinepax Packages Mall, Universal, CUE). 24 showtimes.

What else is playing?

Ready or Not: Here I Come is a horror film at 5 cinemas (Universal, Cinepax Packages Mall, CUE, Cinestar Township, Cinestar Xinhua). 35 showtimes. If you like horror, CUE's Atmos setup makes every creak and whisper come from a different direction. Worth the premium for this genre.

Dracula is at 2 cinemas only: CUE and Universal. 26 showtimes. Limited release but if you're at either cinema anyway, it's an option.

Scream 7 is holding on at Universal and Cinepax Packages Mall with 14 showtimes. It's been out a while. You'll share the hall with a handful of people at most.

Hoppers, Alas Roban, They Will Kill You, and Delhi Gate round out the list with smaller releases. Delhi Gate is CUE only with 4 showtimes.

• Aag Lage Basti Mein is the safe bet. It's everywhere, crowds are loving it, and you won't struggle to find a showtime at any cinema.
• Super Mario Galaxy in 3D at Universal Emporium if you're taking kids. The 3D adds to the experience and Universal's 3D projection is solid.
• Project Hail Mary at CUE if you want sci-fi with the best possible sound. Atmos makes space movies feel different. Or Universal if you want the Urdu dub.
• Into Punjabi cinema? Ishqan De Lekhe and Bullah have the widest releases. Rabb Da Radio 3 if you've followed the series.
• Horror fan? Ready or Not at CUE. The Atmos sound system makes horror genuinely scarier. I turned around during a door-closing scene last time I watched horror there.

How do you book cinema tickets in Lahore?

Cinestar's website (cinestar.com.pk) is slow. Their app works better. Cinepax through Bookme.pk is the smoothest booking experience. CUE's own site (cuecinemas.com) is the best of any cinema chain in Pakistan.

Weekdays are wide open. Tuesday and Wednesday matinees rarely fill past a third of the seats. If you can go then, go then. Better seats, no crowds, and the same movie.
